Washing and Cleaning Oriental Rugs
Antique oriental rugs and semi-antique oriental rugs of all types including Persian, Wool, and Tibetan area rugs, require professional knowledge and skill to clean. The information below will help you keep your oriental rugs beautiful for years to come. Anabel's Oriental Rugs will properly hand wash your area oriental rug. DO NOT use standard carpet cleaning companies for antique or semi-antique oriental rugs including Persian rugs, Tibetan, or Wool oriental rugs. These commercial cleaners use steam and abrasive chemicals that will destroy the lanolin, wool and color in your rug. A professional cleaning at Anabel's will bring out the softness of the wool and the richness of color.
We recommend that you have your area oriental rug cleaned every one to two years. This will protect your investment and assure you of 100% credit toward and exchange, should you desire to trade in your oriental rug at Anabel's for any reason. If the rug becomes too dry, which can happen in environments with extremely dry heat or air-conditioning, the fibers of the pile can become brittle and more prone to damage and wear. Walking on a dirty rug shortens its life prematurely. Dirt and sand fragments act like sandpaper as you grind them into the surface of your rug.
Restoration
Anabel's restoration team should address any repairs to your oriental rug. Fringes or selvages that became partially detached can be sewn by hand using similar threads. Fringes on area oriental rugs typically begin to show signs of wear after 10-15 years.
A variety of other problems that need repair may beset a rug during its lifetime: holes, wrinkle lines, curling edges, visible wear, moth damage and so on. There is nothing that can't be fixed. The question always will be whether the value of the rug warrants the cost of repair.
Rotation
Your oriental area rug should be rotated at least once a year to ensure even wear. In a high traffic area, we recommend every six months. Use shades or curtains to reduce damage caused by direct and indirect sunlight. Keeping your rug from continual exposure to sunlight will protect the rug from fading.
Vacuuming and Sweeping
Your area oriental rug should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove soil and restore life to the wool fibers. DO NOT vacuum the fringe, as it will cause damage over time. Sweeping with a broom will clean the fringe without wearing any. DO NOT vacuum against the nap of the of the rug. This actually presses dirt back into the rug. Sweeping your rug with a broom is the best way to remove loose dirt. Bring out the natural sheen of your rug by sweeping at least once a week. Please check the height setting on your vacuum cleaner. It is not necessary to use the lowest setting.
Padding
A quality pad will not only keep your rug from slipping, but it will also protect it from dirt and wear. Anabel's Oriental Rugs can custom size a pad for your rug, whether you are putting it down on hardwood or carpeting.
Blotting and Removing Stains
Stains should be dealt with by carefully dabbing and sponging with a wool or silk compatible cleaning solution until much of the substance is removed. The area should then be carefully dried. Never scrub or violently sponge the rug, as this may damage the pile and cause the colors to run.
Common Stains
Dog urine on any oriental rug whether it's an antique or semi-antique oriental rug or any other type damages both dyes and foundation and should be rinsed with tepid water and blotted on both sides of the rug immediately. Dark fibers may be more noticeably affected by dog stains and the solutions used in the removal of stains.
One of the main causes of mildew, a fungus that thrives on cotton, is the dampness caused by household plants placed on the oriental rugs. If rugs are allowed to remain damp over a protracted period, the colors may run and mildew may form and cause permanent damage to the foundation or pile.
